APR emmerge cecafa winners

Rwanda champions APR were crowned the new Cecafa Club Cup Champions after beating St. George from Ethiopia 2-0 in extra time at the Amahoro Stadium, Kigali Saturday night.

Kenya’s Sofapaka finished third with a 2-1 win over outgoing champions Atraco from Rwanda.

After a barren regulation time, APR turned on the heat in extra time scoring via Chiukepo Msowoya in the 93rd minute and Victor Nyirenda in the 95th.

Sofapaka were more dominant scoring in the 19th minute through Nigerian import Akinyemi Abass off a Bob Mugalia pass and Laurent Tumba via a 40-metre drive in the 21st minute.

Birory Dady pulled one back for Atraco in the 37th minute.

The final day was presided over by Cecafa patron, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and was witnessed by some 40,000 fans including Inter midfielder Macdonald Mariga from Kenya.

The winners went home with US$30,000, the runners up US$ 20,000 while the third placed side went away with US$ 10,000.

Msowoya finished top of the scorers’ chart with seven goals to his credit. The two-week tournament brings together champion clubs from the region’s 11 member countries.
